5 conditions that can be successfully treated by Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs.
Lower back pain, stomach disorders, menopausal symptoms, PMS/PMDD and anxiety and depression are the 5 most common conditions I treat at Simple.Holistic.Health.
I’m quite sure that you, or someone close to you, has endured lower back pain in the past at least once, so you know how debilitating it can be. Often, the injured patient hopes it will go away by itself, but the reality is that it usually doesn’t and help is needed to relieve the pain. This is where acupuncture comes in and can help relieve pain by releasing endorphins (think opioids), the body’s natural pain-killing chemicals. The natural release of endorphins is quite different from simply taking an opiate drug in that endorphins cause a cascade of chemical reactions in the body to help you manage pain and feel better. In particular, endorphins work with the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine as well as the hormone oxytocin. All of these can help decrease pain as well improve mood and relaxation.
Stomach disorders such as IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome), IBD (Inflammatory bowel disease), diarrhea and constipation can also be treated by visiting my practice. Using both acupuncture and herbs can help in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, strengthening a number of digestive functions, decreasing gut inflammation, and upregulating beneficial gut bacteria. Why stay uncomfortable and in pain when there is help available?
I can also help with conditions related to female health from PMDD, PMS, endometriosis, fibroids to menopausal symptoms. Whether it is irregular periods, heavy bleeding, mild to severe cramping, mild to severe mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems, weight gain, thinning hair, dry skin or vaginal dryness, acupuncture and herbs can balance you out hormonally. Even better, we can usually make it happen within one menstrual cycle or if in menopause, within a couple of weeks!
Last but not least, the fifth most common condition I treat is anxiety and depression. Many have gone through tough times in the past year and a half because of COVID19. We have been faced with fear, anger, loss, grief, loneliness, illness and the combination of it all has increased anxiety and depression within the American population (and the world). Indeed, during the pandemic, about 4 in 10 adults in the U.S. have reported symptoms of anxiety or depressive disorder, a share that has been largely consistent, up from one in ten adults who reported these symptoms from January to June 2019. During the pandemic, a larger than average share of young adults (ages 18-24) report symptoms of anxiety and/or depressive disorder (56%)1.
Acupuncture can help: it is similar to antidepressants in the way it affects the chemical balance in the brain. Acupuncture exerts changes in the body via the peripheral, central, and autonomic nervous systems. Like biomedicine, there are no exact mechanisms on how acupuncture may affect the brain neurochemistry but we do know it affects the levels of dopamine, noradrenaline, serotonin, GABA, and glutamate which are the neurochemicals found to be at play through biomedical research. Although the results felt are usually much quicker than those with western medicine, it still may take a few treatments to feel the full effect of the acupuncture.
Chinese herbs can also alleviate symptoms of depression. Our formulas are always a combination of single herbs that are known to work together to harmonize the affected energetic channels. Although there are single channel imbalances that can cause depression, it is rarely that simple. Typically two or more energetic channels are at play and formulas with multiple herbs are better able to balance out the disharmonies. Unlike the acupuncture treatments, the effects of the herbs can be felt within one to two days if the right formula is prescribed. It is important to note that these herbs rarely cause any side effects.
As you can see, the use of acupuncture and/or Chinese herbs can be used to treat lower back pain, stomach disorders, menopausal symptoms, PMS/PMDD and anxiety and depression and is often quite effective.
